The National Trust is a source of grants and loans through five funding programs. The applicant group must be a not-for-profit organization or a public agency and a member of the National Trust for four of these programs. The fifth funding program will also award for-profit businesses and individuals. Some programs require the recipient to match the award dollar-for-dollar.

Preservation Services Fund (PSF)

The PSF provides financial assistance for consultant services, feasibility studies, public programming, and heritage education activities. Grant awards are up to $5,000, with $1,000 to $1,500 as the average. The application deadlines are February 1 and October 1 of each year. Sometimes grants are also awarded in the Spring; call regarding availability. Johanna Favrot Fund (JFF)

This grant program provides support to not-for-profit organizations and governmental agencies. Individuals and for-profit businesses may apply for funding only if the project for which funding is requested involves a National Historic Landmark. Eligible activities and projects include consultant services; the production of educational materials; and conference or workshop costs. Grants generally range from $2,500 to $8,000. The application deadline is February 1. National Preservation Loan Fund (NPLF)

This fund provides not-for-profit organizations and public agencies with loans and other forms of financial assistance to help or expand local and statewide revolving funds and loan pools, and to undertake development projects involving historic buildings, sites, and districts. The fund also offers special assistance for buildings and sites certified as National Historic Landmarks (NHL) or that exhibit qualities of national significance.

Interest rates, collateral requirements, and other terms vary depending on the proposed project. Loan amounts range from $50,000 to $350,000, and terms are from one to seven years. The interest rate for most loans is fixed at seven percent. Except in the case of National Historic Landmark properties, applicants must be public agencies or incorporated organizations exempt from federal income tax and authorized to engage in the proposed project. Applicant organizations must show evidence of community support and demonstrate the capacity to manage, staff, and finance the project.

There are no deadlines for application to the NPLF. Applications are considered as they are received.
