2005 Awards Guidelines

The 2005 Preservation League of New York State Awards celebrate municipalities and organizations, grassroots preservationists and professional consultants, business owners, journalists and government officials who have shown an outstanding commitment to retaining, promoting and reusing our historic buildings, structures and cultural landscapes.

The program continues a tradition that began in 1979 to honor excellence in the protection and revitalization of the Empire State’s historic and cultural architectural resources. By focusing attention on the accomplishments of individuals, organizations and projects in the field of historic preservation, the Preservation League hopes to encourage standards of excellence and inspire others to give more care and effort to the protection of the irreplaceable resources we have inherited.

Nomination Process

Nominations must be postmarked by February 11, 2005, using the nomination form and including all of the supporting materials as specified on the form. The Preservation League regrets that it cannot return submitted materials. Nominations will be evaluated by the Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Preservation League. All nominators will be notified in writing in April. The awards will be presented in mid-May at the Preservation League’s Annual Meeting in New York City.

Criteria

Nominations will be judged according to:

1.  Project design sensitivity to the historic character and fabric of the property, and degree of preservation or restoration achieved.

2.  Project execution representing the best preservation practice and use of appropriate techniques.

3.  Degree of difficulty of problems or threats faced and the creativity and appropriateness of the solutions applied.

4.  Impact of leader, program, organization or project on the community, region or state.

5.  Degree of imaginative and resourceful collaborative efforts between individuals, communities, organizations and consultants.

Eligibility

All projects must have been executed in New York State, and must have been completed within the last three years.  Historic resources need not be listed in the State or National Registers of Historic Places, but resources must have demonstrated historic or architectural significance.

Award Categories

Individuals

Recognizes creative, inspirational leaders who, either in the public eye or from behind the scenes, have encouraged the protection of historic resources and continued to strengthen and broaden the historic preservation movement in New York State. The Individual Award celebrates government officials, community leaders, local business owners, journalists and other dedicated preservationists who have succeeded in protecting New York’s heritage.

Organizations and Communities

Honors municipalities, community groups, nonprofit organizations and neighborhood associations which, through involvement in community advocacy, public awareness, publications, legal battles and other preservation activities and programs, have shown heroic dedication to New York’s historic resources.

Projects

Applauds outstanding preservation, restoration or rehabilitation projects completed by architects, landscape architects, engineers, planners, developers, preservationists or property owners. Projects may be landscapes, buildings, Main Streets, rural resources, etc. Preservation work should provide properties with greater utility while maintaining as many elements that illustrate historic architectural and cultural significance as possible. Restoration projects should accurately recover the form and detail of the properties during their relevant periods of significance. The Projects Award also acknowledges exceptional published surveys, historic structure or landscape reports, histories, brochures, technical briefs or other preservation publications that have been instrumental in successful preservation projects and goals.
