The Preservation League works in both Albany and Washington D.C. to advance incentives for preservation. Partnering with elected officials and local advocates, the League promotes programs that encourage the use of historic preservation as a tool to revitalize communities, create jobs and stimulate economic activity.

The League joined more than 80 organizations in signing a letter asking Governor Cuomo to maintain his commitment to New York's natural resources as he prepares the Executive Budget for 2017-18. "Under your leadership, New York has become a national leader in expanding, caring for and enhancing its parks and natural areas for public benefit. As you develop your FY2017-2018 Executive Budget proposal, we write to encourage you to continue to build on the tremendous success of these initiatives and capitalize on additional exciting opportunities and untapped potential." This bill would permit the City of New York to replace the current restriction on floor area ratio (FAR) set forth in the state Multiple Dwelling Law with its own limits established in the New York City Zoning Resolution. While the stated intent of this legislation is to help the City address an increased need for affordable housing, the Preservation League strongly urges both houses to pause and consider the impact that this legislation would have on historic properties throughout the city. ![]()
2015On Earth Day, 4/22/15, the League and members of the Hudson Valley Smart Energy Coalition (HVSEC) filed public comments with the NYS Public Service Commission (PSC) on proposals for A/C transmission lines. The League has been deeply involved in the permitting review of New York’s largest electric transmission siting proposal in more than a decade.
Along with the HVSEC, the League is concerned about these proposals’ aesthetic and economic impacts on historic communities, landscapes and working farmland. The groups further question the need for additional bulk transmission capacity to provide power generated upstate to the New York Metro region. The League has already begun preparing for a PSC technical review conference in June. ![]()
In November 2015, League staff presented testimony to the Assembly Standing Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development. Our comments focused on funding for the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP).
The League administers two grant programs in partnership with NYSCA, Preserve New York and Technical Assistance Grants, and called for continued funding for our efforts to help preserve historic and cultural resources throughout New York State. The League also respectfully urged the Committee to support not just level funding, but rather an increase in the State budget appropriation for staffing and operations at the OPRHP. ![]()
