Introducing the Preservation Opportunity Fund

The Preservation League of New York State is thrilled to be starting its 50th Anniversary year with a brand-new grant opportunity for New York nonprofits. Organizations with an ownership interest in, or a long-term lease of, a historic property requiring preservation, restoration, or rehabilitation, are invited to apply for the inaugural year of funding for the League’s new capital grant program.

Technical Assistance Grants - 2023

The Preservation League of New York State and their program partners at the New York State Council on the Arts are thrilled to announce the recipients of their 2023 Technical Assistance Grants. During this grant cycle, 19 projects representing 13 counties across the state have been selected by an independent panel of preservation professionals. A total of $66,576 was awarded.

A Look at the League Connections to the 2022 REDC Grantees

Just like we did last year, when NYS announced its Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) grant recipients, we dove in to find League connections. Announced at the end of 2022, the Round XII REDC grants awarded $90 million in funding to 74 projects. Of those, 17 projects receiving grants totaling $8.9 million have also received direct involvement in the form of advocacy, grants, or loans from the Preservation League. When you break down the numbers, these projects were able to leverage every $1 of League funding for $5 from NYS.

Excellence Award Spotlight: El Barrio Cultural Resource Survey

“We are thrilled that the East Harlem South / El Barrio Reconnaissance-Level Historic Resource Survey has been recognized by the Preservation League with this award,” said Chris Cirillo, Executive Director/President of Ascendant Neighborhood Development (AND) and Member of Landmark East Harlem (LEH), which co-sponsored the project. “The extraordinary work of our preservation consultant, Marissa Marvelli, has raised the bar on historic resources surveys. Focusing on culture and community, the survey prioritizes people over buildings.”

Saving African American History on Long Island: The Peter Crippen House

The Town of Huntington received a Technical Assistance Grant from the League in 2020 to fund an Engineering Structural Analysis of the Peter Crippen House (TAG is a regrant partnership program between the League and the New York State Council on the Arts). We reached out to their Town Historian Robert Hughes to get an update on the project.

Technical Assistance Grants - 2020

The 2020 Technical Assistance Grant round awarded $96,644 to 26 projects in 18 counties, the largest TAG round in both number of projects and dollars distributed. The successful applicants each provide a twenty percent cash match toward the total cost of their projects. With the announcement of the 2020 awards, support provided by TAG since its launch in 2012 totals $471,021. These grants have directly advanced 155 historic preservation efforts.

Gratz Grant - Parrott Hall

The League is proud to help fund a Feasibility Reuse Study with a $9,500 grant from the Donald Stephen Gratz Preservation Services Fund. The Landmark Society of Western New York will contribute $3,500 toward the project cost as a match. The Feasibility Study, including Conditions and Adaptive Use Analysis, will guide future work and enable the Friends of Parrott Hall to prioritize repairs and assess potential new uses for the building.
