Our colleagues at the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (OPRHP) are pleased to announce the release of their 2021-2026 Historic Preservation Plan. This document is the result of two years of planning and extensive public engagement by OPRHP staff. The 21-26 Plan is meant to identify ways in which all New Yorkers, not just those who are traditionally included in the preservation field, can have a role in identifying and protecting places that are important to them. Unlike past plans, the 21-26 plan places increased emphasis on ideas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

A core organizing principle, according to Frances Stern, Historic Site Restoration Coordinator at OPHRP, is “to expand complex narratives in order to tell a more complete story that really represents our state’s truly diverse history.”

Preservation—an ongoing process of discovery, learning, celebration, and reconciliation of history— possesses the capability to serve the needs of everyone when the field adapts and changes enough to meet advocates where they are.
